About Scott Winship
As far back as I can remember, I have always had an affinity with creating three-dimensional structures. At secondary school I enjoyed Design Communication and Art and went on to study at Harrogate College, where I specialised in Ceramics, achieving an overall Merit grade in Advanced GNVQ Art and Design. This secured me a place at Swansea University on a Degree course in Design Ceramics.

Later on I became interested in traditional crafts and landscaping, and particularly dry stone walling, which would offer me the opportunity to work outside, in the Yorkshire Dales. In January 2000 I started training with a well established dry stone waller based near Skipton. He threw me in at the deep end, learning closely under him on his jobs, but on a self employed basis. This enabled me to develop key skills in dry stone walling. I picked his skills up quickly and within 5 months he had the confidence to leave me alone on his own clients’ hill farms. The clients were happy and I progressed in skill and confidence. By 2002 I was taking on my own jobs. I went on to achieve the Lantra Awarded Intermediate Certificate in Dry Stone Walling done through the DSWA in the summer of 2002.

By early 2003 I had a large enough client base to manage my own Dry Stone Walling business. By now I had built up a customer basis throughout The Yorkshire Dales, mainly Nidderdale. So I was covering a wide area, learning & adapting to work with any source of stone. But Nidderdale was always close to my heart and my families farming roots, so focused advertising within The Harrogate District.

As the years rolled on my skill level blossomed, and I took advantage gaining more experience and skill in focusing a higher quality level of craftsmanship especially in domestic garden walling, landscapes and bespoke stonework features.

In more recent years from around 2010 onwards I have developed a regular client basis for class tuition, training my own pupils in the art of Dry Stone Walling. Most of my training days are lottery funded through the Hackfall and Woodland Trusts and Nidderdale A.O.N.B. and Mowbray School.

Taking advantage of my good intuition, people skills, and perceptive nature, enables me to make a positive connection with a wide range of pupils I have taught.
They have ranged from young offenders, army cadets, children with special needs and the general public. Every time I get positive feedback from my clients, so I now see this avenue of work as a way to develop my career in Dry Stone Walling for the later years to come.

In the summer of 2012 I passed my Lantra Awarded Advanced Certificate in Dry Stone Walling done through the DSWA. I am already working on the off site features this autumn towards passing the Mastercraftman Certificate.

Over my years of experience in dry stone walling I have built up regular customers who supply me with plentiful work. These include farmers, estate owners, construction firms, builders, Nidderdale A.O.N.B & the Woodland Trust, plus home owners who want decorative garden features.

It is a great feeling of job satisfaction when I create a piece of artwork for someone in their garden or front lawn, knowing I executed the construction safely, to a high level of craftsmanship and to the customer’s requirements.
